What to bring

Blackouts, fainting, fits and seizures

Anyone who has ever blacked out, fainted without warning, had a fit or seizure, or has epilepsy.

You must bring

  • Every hospital or specialist letter about the blackout or seizure, showing the dates and the cause found.
  • Your current medicines list, including any epilepsy medicine.

What the DVLA says (Group 2 standard, used for D4 and taxi medicals)

  • The rules depend on the cause. Some blackouts mean months off driving; seizures can mean several years off a bus, lorry or taxi licence.
  • You must tell the DVLA about seizures and most unexplained blackouts.

Taxi and private hire medicals use this same Group 2 standard in most councils. Source: DVLA, Assessing fitness to drive.

Why we ask

The doctor needs the cause and dates to answer the form correctly. Please speak to us first so you don't pay for a medical that can't be completed.

This page explains the DVLA standard in plain English. It is not a decision about you. The doctor decides what can be signed on the day, and your council or the DVLA makes the licensing decision.
