What to bring

Diabetes treated with insulin

Anyone who uses insulin for diabetes.

You must bring

  • Your blood glucose meter (or meters), with at least 4 weeks of readings stored in its memory.
  • Your latest diabetes clinic letter.
  • Taxi drivers: a report from a consultant diabetes specialist confirming you meet the bus and lorry (Group 2) insulin standard. Most councils want an independent consultant, not your usual diabetes team. Check with your council.

On the day

  • Bring your meter and CGM if you use one.

What the DVLA says (Group 2 standard, used for D4 and taxi medicals)

  • You must tell the DVLA. For a bus or lorry licence you need full awareness of hypos and no severe hypo (needing help from another person) in the last 12 months.
  • You must test your glucose at least twice a day, including days you don't drive, before your first journey and at least every 2 hours while driving.
  • Bus and lorry drivers on insulin are seen every year by an independent consultant diabetes specialist, arranged through the DVLA, who checks 4 weeks of stored meter readings.

Taxi and private hire medicals use this same Group 2 standard in most councils. Source: DVLA, Assessing fitness to drive.

This page explains the DVLA standard in plain English. It is not a decision about you. The doctor decides what can be signed on the day, and your council or the DVLA makes the licensing decision.
