What to bring

Eye conditions

Anyone with glaucoma, cataract, diabetic eye disease, loss of side vision, double vision, or useful sight in one eye only.

You must bring

  • Your glasses or contact lenses, and your latest glasses prescription.
  • Your optician or eye clinic letter about the condition.
  • Any visual field test result (often called an Esterman test).

What the DVLA says (Group 2 standard, used for D4 and taxi medicals)

  • Bus and lorry drivers need at least 6/7.5 in the better eye and 6/60 in the weaker eye, with glasses or lenses if needed. Glasses must be no stronger than +8.
  • You also need a wide field of vision: at least 160 degrees side to side with no gaps in the centre.
  • Sight in one eye only, or uncorrected sight below 3/60 in one eye, bars a bus or lorry licence.

Taxi and private hire medicals use this same Group 2 standard in most councils. Source: DVLA, Assessing fitness to drive.

Why we ask

The eye section of the form needs these results. A field test can only be done by an optician, not at our clinic.

With this condition the rules are strict. A two-minute chat can save you a wasted £45.

This page explains the DVLA standard in plain English. It is not a decision about you. The doctor decides what can be signed on the day, and your council or the DVLA makes the licensing decision.
