What to bring

Sleep apnoea and daytime sleepiness

Anyone diagnosed with sleep apnoea, or who often feels sleepy enough to nod off in the day.

You must bring

  • Your sleep clinic letter confirming your diagnosis and treatment.
  • Your CPAP machine usage (compliance) report from the last month. Most machines or apps can print or show this.

On the day

  • Use your CPAP as normal the night before.

What the DVLA says (Group 2 standard, used for D4 and taxi medicals)

  • With moderate or severe sleep apnoea and daytime sleepiness, you must not drive a bus, lorry or taxi until your symptoms are controlled and you are using your treatment. You must tell the DVLA.
  • The DVLA usually reviews this every year.

Taxi and private hire medicals use this same Group 2 standard in most councils. Source: DVLA, Assessing fitness to drive.

Why we ask

The usage report proves your treatment is working. It's the evidence the form asks about.

This page explains the DVLA standard in plain English. It is not a decision about you. The doctor decides what can be signed on the day, and your council or the DVLA makes the licensing decision.
